We are pleased to announce the exhibition “Syria: Intimate Lands”, curated as part of the CINEMED – Montpellier Mediterranean Film Festival (France, Montpellier, October 17–25, 2025).

I returned to places I used to visit in my childhood, carrying a camera and trying to see what remained and what had changed. This journey was not so much a search for the past as it was an attempt to understand our relationship with place after everything that has happened.

I met people who had returned to destroyed homes and lands exhausted by war, yet they still hold on to them and continue their lives there. Through them, I discovered the place anew—not only as a memory, but as a daily relationship built on patience, labor, and belonging.

These photographs are an attempt to reflect on that intimate bond between people and their land, and on their ability to endure and rebuild their lives despite all the losses

عدتُ إلى أماكن كنت أزورها في طفولتي، أحمل الكاميرا وأحاول أن أرى ما بقي منها، وما تغيّر. لم تكن هذه الرحلة بحثاً عن الماضي بقدر ما كانت محاولة لفهم علاقتنا بالمكان بعد كل ما حدث.

التقيت بأشخاص عادوا إلى بيوت مهدمة وأراضٍ أنهكتها الحرب، لكنهم ما زالوا يتمسكون بها ويواصلون حياتهم فيها. من خلالهم اكتشفت المكان من جديد؛ ليس كذاكرة فقط، بل كعلاقة يومية من الصبر والعمل والانتماء.

هذه الصور هي محاولة للتأمل في تلك العلاقة الحميمة بين الناس وأرضهم، وفي قدرتهم على البقاء وإعادة بناء حياتهم رغم كل الخسارات
